Plain-English DPDP term

What is Data Minimisation?

Simple meaning

Data minimisation means collecting and keeping only the personal data that is genuinely needed for the stated purpose.

A simple example

A newsletter signup normally needs an email address, not an Aadhaar number and home address.

Why it matters

DPDP compliance is not only a policy exercise. This term matters when a real person enters a form, uses a product, speaks to support or asks the company to act. The business should be able to explain the purpose, owner, systems, vendors, retention and proof in simple language.

What to check

Common mistake

Treating the definition as finished work. A clear definition is useful only when the team can apply it to a real data flow and keep evidence.

First useful action

Pick one customer or employee journey. Mark where this term changes a decision, then name the owner and the evidence that should exist.
